Presentation of “Digitization of Payments to Migrant Workers” hosted by the Embassy of Switzerland in Jordan, 7 October 2019

A workshop was held on the “Digitization of Payments to Migrant Workers” hosted by the Swiss Embassy which discussed wage payments to migrant workers across sectors, with particular focus on the garment sector. The presentation’s objective was to explore demand-side factors associated with wage payments, identifying the needs and behaviors of migrants for domestic and international payments. According to the Chairman of JGATE, the shift towards digitization is crucial, however the research revealed that “Cash is King” for the vast majority of migrant workers within the sector, due to low levels of financial literacy. As such, opportunities towards financial education present themselves in order to encourage digital payments and at the same token, overcome the challenge of implementing a digital wage payment system to migrant communities in Jordan.
